The classic Herringbone design can be traced back to the Romans who used the design in the construction of roads to add strength. The pattern became know as “Herring – Bone” as it resembles the out line of a fish skeleton. The Renaissance periods between the 14th and 17th centuries saw the design being used in many aspects of architectural design including flooring.
